Initially, your oral health is examined by a dentists trained in gum diseases and treatment, such as a periodontist, to give you a diagnosis and recommend treatment options.

Examination

During the examination, the dentist will discuss your and your family’s medical history with you, your current medical condition, and any medications that you take. Radiographic images through X-ray or even CEREC technology may be used to assess your gum contours and also your teeth structure.

Disinfecting periodontal pockets with LANAP

LANAP technology will be used to take a biopsy too of your gum tissue to identify the bacteria present and disease. The gum or periodontal pockets may be probed for depth to assess whether these need reducing after infectious tissue is removed. The LANAP laser light is used to selectively kill the bacteria and to clean the infected tissue or epithelium out of the periodontal sockets through laser troughing initially and then through use of the free running pulse. By varying the density, pulse duration and repetition rate of the LANAP laser light or energy, the dentist can precisely remove infected tissue and disinfect through the ablation and aseptic haemostasis process.

Scaling and sealing the periodontal pocket

An ultrasonic scaler or hand instrument is then used to remove the laser-treated calcified tartar and calculus under the gum line and on the root before the laser is again used to clean, sterilise, and seal the pocket to prevent bleeding, inflammation and re-infection.

Creating new connective tissue (periodontal ligament)

Once the periodontal pocket is disinfected, a fibrin clot and gingival crest is used with the laser to reattach the connective tissue to the clean root surface. By stimulating the growth of existing step cells, the LANAP laser allows formation of a new root surface cementum coating, and a new connective tissue forming the periodontal ligament with collagen that attaches the tooth roots. The treatment helps this new ligament form and bond with the root surface for periodontal healing.
