LANAP procedure does not cure gum disease entirely, but does eradicate the bacteria-infected tissue and removes all disease-causing bacteria from the mouth. Through regeneration and restoration of connective tissue forming the periodontal ligament, the teeth and gums can then heal naturally while being monitored as a form of “maintenance” to protect against re-infection.

Patients are also advised on steps to take that reduce risk of periodontal disease. These steps include:

  • Following recommended dental hygiene practices for diet, brushing, flossing, and rinsing with antiseptic mouthwash
  • Using a soft toothbrush that will not irritate the gums, increase sensitivity or  cause damage to tooth enamel
  • Attending regular appointments with the dentist or dental hygienist for cleaning and to check for symptoms of gum disease or periodontitis
  • Checking that selenium levels which are necessary for cellular function are not too low

With help from dental professionals, people can learn how best to look after their oral and overall health, so that diseases like periodontitis can be prevented or controlled.
